The first Book Rack in the Quad Cities was opened in the old Duck Creek Plaza, Bettendorf, in 1983 by Edie and Larry Nissen.
The basic operation of the store has always been to accept books in trade for store credit and allow customers to use that credit toward the purchase of a different used paperback book. It is an elegantly simple process that gives significant benefit to the avid reader while allowing The Book Rack to thrive.
Now owned by Claudia & Bob Applegate, The Book Rack opened in Moline in 2010 and moved from Bettendorf to Davenport in 2012. The inventory of The Book Rack inventory has grown from 20,000 books in 2008 to over 65,000. The Moline Book Rack closed September 27, 2015 when the lease expired. All operations are now consolidated in Davenport.
